Does the UK Government Even Understand Business?
You have to ask yourself: Does the UK government really have a clue about business? About confidence, opportunity, and growth? Since launching Creative Boom in 2009, I’ve watched the creative industries get pelted from all sides – and yet, here we are. Still standing, still surviving. But barely.
This year, I’ve heard from countless studios, designers, agencies and publications who say it’s been their worst year yet. I’m hearing a lot of: “If things don’t pick up…” – followed by quiet fears of closures, layoffs, or walking away from it all. It’s incredibly disheartening.
We’ve weathered the 2008 crash, Brexit, the pandemic (with next to no real support), mounting debt, and now the looming uncertainty of AI. Sixteen years on from starting my own venture, it feels like our generation of creatives has been through a relentless cycle of highs and lows.
And don’t even get me started on the cost of living crisis, house prices, or the state of public services. I know – we’re all sick of hearing it. But honestly? I’m angry. Furious, actually. Livid. Not just at the lack of real support, but at the constant doom-mongering from the top. At the refusal to speak positively about the economy or offer even a glimmer of vision or hope.
Because here’s the thing: businesses need confidence. Founders need clarity. Freelancers need momentum. And all of us need a government that either helps or gets out of the way – so we can actually build, hire, create and grow.
Instead, we’re stuck in limbo, all holding out for the next Autumn Budget. Waiting. Hesitating. Because how can anyone invest or take risks when they don’t know what’s around the corner?
So if you’re feeling the strain, please know you’re not alone. I see you. I hear you. And I genuinely hope – for all of us – that things start to shift soon.
